This week’s edition of Reader’s Rides brings us a pair of very quick rides, including John Dougherty’s mean little Chevy S-10 and Greg Seher’s show-quality ’67 Camaro, both of which have been in the eight-second zone at over 150 MPH.
John Dougherty’s ’91 S-10
Those that were regular viewers of the PINKS: All Out programs on the Speed Channel just might recall this 1991 Chevrolet S-10 pickup owned and driven by John Dougherty. The Northern California racer purchased the truck back in 2010 to compete in the PINKS event near his home in Sonoma, and actually made the 16-car field for the show, after re-running a fellow competitor three times before finally being selected.
The stock suspension pickup features power from a 400 cubic inch Dart ‘Little M’ small block that’s been stuffed with JE Pistons and a Dougherty Racing Cams roller camshaft and topped with a set of AFR 235 cylinder heads, an Edlebrock Super Victor 2 intake manifold, and a Horsepower Innovations-prepped 850 cfm Holley E85 carburetor. For a little extra oomph, Dougherty has bolted up a crossbar nitrous plate system handled by a Modotek nitrous controller, delivering an extra 300 horses to the small block bullet. A TH350 transmission and a 9.5-inch converter move the power back to a 9-inch Ford rear end outfitted with 3.89 gears and a Summer Brothers 35-spline spool and axles.
The truck runs on a set of 275 Drag Radials wrapped around 15 x 10 Weld Racing wheels on Calvert Racing springs and bars and Vi-King shocks.
Intended for grudge racing and ‘fun runs’, Dougherty’s feisty little pickup gets after it with a quarter-mile best of 8.79 a 155 MPH and a 5.53 at 125 in the eighth, all while crossing the scales at 3,140 lbs.
Greg Seher’s ’67 Camaro
We won’t lie…we like our race cars as clean as can be, and Michigan native Greg Seher’s ultra-sharp ’67 Camaro is exactly that. And boy, does it put on a show, too.
Seher’s Camaro, which he campaigns in Outlaw Limited Street, Drag Radial, and with the Midwest Super Stock Mafia, has been in the family since 1999, when Greg was just 14 years old. The car was totaled-out when purchased and became a father-son project to fully restore into the shining gem you see here. The rebuild was completed in time for the 2002 season, when Greg, then of legal driving age, stepped behind the wheel and began competing in 9.0 Index competition.
The all-steel Camaro weighs in at a hefty 3,600 lbs., with a potent 565 cubic inch big block Chevrolet under the hood featuring a single Induction Solutions double cross plate nitrous kit getting all that weight down the track in less than nine seconds. The Seher’s have backed the power up with a Turbo 400 transmission paired with a Neal Chance converter, transferring back to a narrowed Dana 60 rear with 3.73 gears riding on ladder bars and finally, a set of Mickey Thompson 295/65 Drag Radials.
The interior of the car, according to Seher, is largely stock, with the factory rear seat, factory dash, and console all contained within the 12-point cage that’s been added for rigidity and safety. A pair of racing seats have also been installed.
The car has been as quick as 8.41-seconds at 161 MPH in the quarter-mile and 5.40 at 131 in the eighth with a quick short time of 1.27.
“I’d like to thank my wife, Nicole, my mom and dad, my crew chief, Chris Schultetus, Jim David, Jimmer Kline, and Jim and Jimmy Plimpton. Without these people this car wouldn’t go down the track,” Seher shared with us.
Check back with us next week as we feature another set of Reader’s Rides! You never know, it just might be your ride getting some ink.
