Our second thought when we saw this video of a golf cart enduring an incredibly destructive crash test was “hey, a lot of racers have golf carts, and every now and then, a few bad decisions are made in the late evening hours after a beverage or two — maybe we ought to show them this as a reminder of how unforgiving their pit vehicle really is.” Our first thought, of course, was “holy crap!”
As you can see in the video, the cart is first run headlong straight into a solid wall, much the same way that automobiles are crash-tested. And while it may appear that the cart is flat hauling the mail into the wall, it is in fact only traveling at 50 km/h, or roughly 31 MPH, which is well within the realm of most gas and electric carts that haven’t been ragged out for years at the local country club and can barely muster a sputter and a backfire.
Without even putting up a fight, the golf bag carrier race car tow vehicle folds right up upon impact, and we can pick out the knees, the neck, and very likely the back as broken in the melee right off the bat. And that’s with the rider wearing a seat belt — most carts don’t even have seat belts, and those that do have probably never been used. Without being restrained, the dummy would probably just go right through the windshield and into the wall.
The cart puts up a slightly better fight in the side impact, but the dummy meanwhile, does not.
So we say, let this serve as a little notice that a golf cart isn’t as safe as you might be led to believe, no matter how many late night wheelies, burnouts, or dirt hill jumps it’s survived through to this point. Please, drive carefully.
