Walk through the pits of a NASCAR race and you’ll find three different engines — GM, Ford and Toyota 358ci V8s. Stroll through the garage at a Formula 1 race, and if you can see any engines you’ll find only three different types — Mercedes, Renault and Ferrari 1.6-liter V6s. Wander through the pits of a drag race and you’ll just as many different engines, sizes and modifications as you find cars. EngineLabs was at Fontana for the NMCA West event, checking out the powerplants in a variety of classes. We found Fords, Hemis, big-blocks, small-blocks and even a sweet-looking VW.

We’ll have followup reports on some of the Pro Mod engines as these beasts are making around 3,000 horsepower by using plenty of boost or nitrous.
