This footage of IHRA Pro Modified action shot at Huntsville Dragway in 1993 features some drivers that went on to become legends in the door slammer racing arena. The videos, shot from the stands by YouTuber Wayne Holland, contain many fan favorites such as Scotty Cannon, Bill Kuhlmann and the Peterson Family trio.Â
Taken during the infancy of the class — just it’s third year of existence — the footage shows the diversity and disparity that has led to such a successful, enduring life for Pro Modified. While the swoopy ZR1 Corvette body was the flavor of the day, the class also featured IROC-style Camaros, Chevelles, Luminas and a third-generation Trans Am, all running a mixture of supercharged engines and nitrous-injected powerplants. Scotty Cannon, running his familiar flamed red OnSat livery, set the pace for this particular qualifying session at a 4.27 at 168 MPH, with the bulk of the entries running in the 4.30’s and 4.40’s.
Throughout the videos, the announcer drops some great information about the racers and the class itself, including how, at the time, Tim McAmis and Scotty Cannon were the only two men to have won the Pro Modified World Championship as the two ran each other at the end of the session. The announcer also details why Norman Estes is driving his Trans Am, and shares some info on the Peterson family and their three identical Chevelles. Also making an appearance, nitrous guru Steve Johnson, who has made a career of designing, building and tuning some of the most advanced nitrous systems in the industry. Be sure to keep an eye out for other doorslammer legends as Shannon Jenkins, Brian Gahm, Ed Hoover, and Al Billes, who made the 900-mile haul from Ontario, Canada to compete in his Maple Leaf-emblazoned Camaro.
This video was taken during what most would consider the rise of Pro Mod popularity, and it’s great to see the class remains hugely popular with fans young and old over 20 years later.
