It’s hard to believe that fifteen years has passed since Larry “Spiderman” McBride made the first five-second pass in motorcycle drag racing history in Houston back in 1999. Since that time, seven other Top Fuel Motorcycle races in the states and abroad have followed the elder statesman of two-wheeled drag racing into the magical five-second zone, but perhaps most surprisingly, never at any point in the decade-and-a-half since that history-making run at the NHRA Supernationals have two of these nitro-fueled behemoths both made runs in the fives on the same pass. Even during the years that McBride traded record-breaking blows with Korry Hogan, not once did the pair turn the trick side-by-side.
But at the Mickey Thompson MIRock Superbike Series event at the Maryland International Raceway last weekend, it finally happened.
For the first time in the history of the popular MIRock series, Top Fuel Motorcycles were a part of the program, with McBride taking on Dave Vantine aboard a bike owned by Greg Pollard in four schooled match races for the fans on hand. And a show they got!
McBride, with more five-second runs than Quaker has Oats to his credit, had pounded out a 5.97 on Saturday but followed it up with runs in the sixes, while Vantine, who had never recorded a five-second run in his life, was mired in the low sixes himself. Needless to say, no one quite expected what they were about to witness. On the first pass on Sunday, Vantine and McBride blasted down the MIR quarter-mile and lit the scoreboards up with a pair of fives — for the first time in history — with the Spiderman clocking a killer 5.79 to Vantine’s 5.97.
With that, Vantine became the ninth rider in the world to cover the quarter-mile in under six seconds on a wheel-driven, piston-powered motorcycle, while McBride earned the dubious distinction of being one half of the first side-by-side “five” to go along with his historic run that started it all fifteen long years ago.
The crew at DragBike.com was in the house at MIR, and captured the surreal moment seen here on camera for all the world to see. Be sure to hit them up for more from the MIRock race, including video of the additional runs between McBride and Vantine.
