AJ Fiorelli Defies Gravity With Near-Quarter Mile Wheelstand!

Just the notion of such an event stirs most primal of gearhead urges. Does it really get any better than bumpers dragging, sparks flying, headers smashing and your occasional wall-smacking all wrapped up in one intense who-can-hang-the-hoops-the-farthest showdown? Heck no it doesn’t!

At this years Power Wheelstand Championships at historic Byron Dragway in Byron Illinois, AJ Fiorelli came for his tenth shot at the world’s best wheelstander title after, according to the track announcer, experiencing breakage of some degree that sidelined him for the previous nine PWC’s. Luckily, there were plenty of cameras rolling to capture all of the action on video and share it with the world. Let’s take a look at AJ’s warm-up video below:

Fiorelli walked his ‘Cuda right across the centerline, but it’s apparent that the car is right at home on the back bumper. Our perspective for the actual competition pass is from the other side of the track, giving an excellent view of the full 1/4 mile Byron facility.

In a feat of back-tire balance for the ages, AJ’s ‘Cuda powered the front end into the air and didn’t return the skinny tires to the asphalt until what looks to be 1,200 feet or so downtrack, while clicking the 1/4 mile timers with a respectable 11.86 ET. According to the video’s description, the heavy Mopar totes the tires in such unbelievably straight lines thanks to the hard work of Eric Vicary at Midwest Chassis, while Hilyard Performance provides the motivation that sends the ‘Cuda skyward. Keeping the horsepower connected to the rear end is a Brooks Transmission-built slushbox mated to a Midwest Converter torque converter.

Now, we can’t wait to see if he’s able to make the full 1,320 pass on the back bumper next year at the next Power Wheelstand Championships, because amazingly, that’s the only feat left to accomplish at the world famous event.
