Sticking a high revving, small displacement engine in front of a manual transmission and adding a turbo for good measure is a recipe for smoking-quick times at the track. The Mazda Wankel rotary engine has been getting the hot rod treatment in the import racing world for years, and for good reason — it makes big power when you add boost to it. This little Wankel-powered Mazda 323 has a nasty 13B under the hood that propels it deep into the nine second zone at the track.

The Mazda 323 began life as your average small family car that would provide the masses affordable transportation, but like anything put into an Australian’s hands, it can be turned into a race car. Replacing the stock engine with this 13B rotary engine transforms the small passenger car into a lightweight pocket rocket. The addition of a bridge port to the 13B lets this motor breathe up top and scream to over 8,000 rpm.

This particular 13B received is fueled by E85, and has been assembled by Promaz Racing. A Micro Tech EFI system keeps everything running smoothly; boost comes from a 76mm Garrett GT42R turbo. The driver rips through the gears using a top loader style transmission filled with Liberty dog-ring gears.
