This weeks Reader’s Rides is a true team effort, with a trio of weekend warrior Ford’s hailing from the 1960’s, 80’s and 90’s.
The Buckles racing tram out of Tennessee, consisting of James, Justin, and Jason, have certainly kept their racing hobby all in the family, proudly campaigning their blue oval machines at the Bristol Dragway in the Super Pro and Pro/Footbrake eliminators.
Jason, who first got behind the wheel and began the obsession in 1998, owns and drives the team’s 1967 Fairlane, which is powered by a 410 cubic inch Ford topped with a 1050cfm Quick Fuel carburetor and Edelbrock Victor Jr. intake, along RHS cylinder heads. A Crane Cams roller camshaft handles the valvetrain chores, and a C4 transmission delivers the power to the 9-inch rear end housing filled with 5.43 gears.
The 3,100 lb. classic has been modified on its exterior for the sake of shedding weight, with a fiberglass hood, fenders, bumpers, and trunk lid all added. The car rides on a ladder bar rear suspension and a Mustang II front setup with QA1 coil over shocks, rolling on Centerline wheels. Jason has a third and with place points finish to his credit at Bristol, having won seven times in 15 final round appearances. To date, he’s been as quick as 6.32 at 106 MPH in the eighth mile while competing in the Pro class.
Justin, meanwhile, campaigns a 1983 Ford Ranger powered by a .030” over 351 Windsor with a combination similar to that of Jason’s Fairlane, featuring a 950cfm Quick Fuel carburetor, Edelbrock Victor Jr. intake, RHS heads, a Howard’s solid roller camshaft, all transferring through a C4 transmission back to a 9-inch rear with 4.86 gears sitting on ladder bars. The front suspension is entirely stock, with Billet Specialties wheels on all four corners and Mickey Thompson 28×10.5-15 rubber out back.
Justin has been to four final rounds in his pickup and earned a 2-for-4 split, with his most notable achievement winning the Tennessee state championship race in 2010, earning an NHRA ‘Wally’ trophy in the process as the Pro/Footbrake class champion. Justin’s Ranger isn’t far behind in the elapsed time department of the Fairlane, posting a 6.85 at 98 MPH best with sixty-foot times in the 1.30’s.
The teams’ latest model ride, a ’97 Mustang, is owned and raced by James, the veteran of the family with a racing history going back 20 years. The multi-time race-winning Mustang has a 386 cubic inch Windsor under the hood, with a 950cfm Proform carburetor supplying the fuel through a Victor Jr. intake to a set of Victor Jr. cylinder heads, with a valvetrain controlled by the Herbert roller camshaft.
A C4 transmission moves the power back to the Ford 8.8 rear end with 4.56 gears, propelling it to elapsed times in the 6.4-second range at north of 104 MPH in eighth mile bracket competition. The 2,900 lb. Pony car features stock-style rear suspension with coilover shocks and a tubular K-member up front, and rides on Weld Racing Alumstars all the way around and 28×11.5-15 slicks getting the power to the ground.
