The performance racing industry is known to attract all sorts of manufacturers in hopes to expand their pool of customers. It is not uncommon for companies based in aerospace or defense to adapt their products over and into racing applications. At the 2021 PRI Show, we noticed Weldon Pumps, a seventy year old aerospace engineering and manufacturing firm, on display. 

Weldon Racing Pump’s Racing Product Manager, Jim Craig walked us through their newest fuel pump. 

“Basically, what we got is Weldon’s two new versions of a brushless pump. The new 1100-ABL is based off of our 1100 Series. With the 1100-ABL, you are looking at 120 gallons an hour at 100 PSI drawing 12 amps.” 

“The fitment is identical to our previous 600 series or 100 series in-take pumps which can also be configured outside the tank.”

1100-ABL Brushless Fuel Pump Features include:

• Brushless
• Dash 10 inlet
• Dash 10 outlet
• 12 volt compatible
• 14 volt compatible
• 16 volt compatible

“Basically it is a little bit better, flow wise, than our 1100-A. Which is a hundred gallons an hour. This new unit here is 120 gallons. What is most impressive is the amp draw at only 12 amps. It is very efficient.” 

What Applications Is The 1100-ABL Brushless Fuel Pump Designed For?

DragZine: “What market is this targeting?”

“Anything where an electric external fuel pump can be used. Predominantly, my black flange style fuel pumps are used in off-road racing applications. A lot of street rod builders are using them with the integrated tanks.” 

“The other style, which is used outside the tank, can be used anywhere. So it is drag race, street cars, off-road, boats, and anywhere that needs around a 100 gallons an hour. Anything that is running 1,000 – 1,200 HP.”

“The luxury with the new brushless intake pump is that you can run ethanol through it. You can diesel through it. The other one, the life expectancy was much shorter because fuel had to flow through the motor. That is now not the case with the 1100-ABL brushless fuel pump.”
