Coan Engineering’s latest addition to its Xtra-Lite billet series of torque converters is a 9-inch lock-up model. This new converter is designed specifically for applications competing in the 1,500- to 2,000-horsepower range. The converter features a billet aluminum pump, billet aluminum six-bolt cover, billet stator, and Coan exclusive Super Sprag. With the ability to mate to the Turbo-400, Bruno Drive and Quick Drive transmissions with either a 1-1/8-, 1-3/16- or 1-1/4-inch input shafts, the converter is extremely versatile. A sample of the new “Super Mega XL” converter was open for display at the recent 2017 Performance Racing Industry Show.
Jason Coan points out that “The popularity of lock-up transmissions and converters has re-emerged, this time in outlaw drag racing. Billet Lock-Up converters are an extension of our existing bolt-together converter lineup which has been dominating Automatic Pro-Mod, Competition Eliminator, Super Stock, and Stock Eliminator classes for years. Recently, we have been building a lot of 10-inch lock-up converters for Outlaw Pro-Mod cars.”
Coan Engineering developed this new 9-inch lock-up version tailored towards small power adder or large naturally aspirated heads-up racers. This design is perfect for classes that have small-blocks and small tire combinations,” Jason Coan adds. “We did some extensive late season testing with a small tire/nitrous race car, and everything worked well with this new design.
Outlaw, small tire, and no prep drag racing is a great emerging market. We are looking forward to developing even more specific products like this for heads-up applications.”
Coan also points out that their Lock-Up converters are designed and built to be easily tuned and serviced. A bolt-in billet pressure plate retains the internal clutch pack eliminates unwanted thrust. The stall speed of the converter is easily tuned by choosing from Coan’s vast selection of billet aluminum and steel stators.
