The world of Pro Modified racing has always existed on the fringe of the extreme. More power, crazier combinations, and enormous power adders are pretty much required of the class participants in order to stay competitive. So it’s really no surprise that transmissions would follow suit.
Craig Liberty, owner of Liberty’s Gears, saw the writing on the wall early on. “About five years ago, customers really didn’t want to run a clutch anymore. Torque converters seemed to be the wave of the future, so we designed a transmission to go behind a torque converter drive unit,” Liberty says. “We designed a system of adapters and couplers to get a Liberty behind a torque converter, but [racers] just weren’t buying them. I started asking racers why, and they didn’t like the adapter and coupler idea.”
With the realization that an adapted solution wasn’t what the market wanted, Liberty set out to build a purpose-built Pro Mod transmission in his proven, signature style, but one that uses a torque converter. “So now I’ve made a purpose-built unit that bolts directly to a torque converter drive, with no adapters,” he says.
However, as soon as he started development, things started to get silly. “We started with three-speed transmissions, because, after talking to the racers: ‘Three speeds is all we’re ever gonna need,’” recalls Liberty. “It is kinda funny. Before we ever got the three-speed ironed out, everyone started saying, ‘Wow, we need another gear.’ So we started on a four-speed. Before that was out and proven, they needed a five-speed, and then a six-speed. Ultimately, we have seven-speed transmissions now, and the circumstances that have brought us here are nothing anyone could have foreseen four or five years ago when we started this project.”
The Liberty’s Gears’ Extreme-T transmission is available in configurations with as few as two, or as many as seven speeds, the latter of which offers cutting edge ability on the racetrack. “The fact that it brings an engine up to its peak RPM and essentially holds it there for the entire run has been amazing in regards to performance gains,” Liberty shares. “You can get the RPM to right where you want it, lock up the converter, and then you have very short drops which are really easy on the tire, the ring-and-pinion, and the U-joints. It doesn’t punish anything and you see far fewer aborted runs.”
