The introduction of the new Callies/Energy Manufacturing big-block Chevrolet cast-iron block was one of the highlights of the first day of the Performance Racing Industry Show in Indianapolis.

Street Muscle’s Scott Parker interviewed Heath Norton, the president of Callies Performance Products, who dished the dirt on the features of the new cast-iron Chevrolet big block, which will give street enthusiasts, restorers, and racers a chance to get a new high-quality block at what Norton described as a competitive price.

We just feel there’s a need for it,” says Norton. “It gives our customers options—making sure everybody has enough product so people can get the job done for what they need. Some people may want it, some people may not, but we’re gonna offer it and make sure people have the ability to get blocks in a timely manner at a competitive price.

Pricing has yet to be determined, but per Norton, the block will be available in 9.8- and 10.2-inch deck heights. The bore size will be 4.500 inches, and the blocks will be offered with cast or billet main caps. The blocks themselves will be pre-clearanced for ease of assembly and shipped in a semi-finished state. Main studs will be offered.

“As this evolves, we will listen to our engine builders and make numerous improvements with it,” says Norton. He added it is a high-quality, high-strength cast iron. He said after a while, different cam heights will be offered further down the line.

The block has a priority oiling system, and it is fully water-jacketed for use on the street.
