Readers Rig: This F-450 Super Duty Is An Atlas Of A Truck

There are times when a big truck might not be big enough for a given task. Most of the time this occurs within a commercial business. But sometimes, that business is a family business, and that family business is a great American farm. When it came time to build a “big” truck, the gang of Diesel Power Products (DPP) decided to start big, and began this build with a monster of a Super Duty, the F-450.

The 2021 F-450 represents the pinnacle of purpose-built full-size trucks. It is designed to move the heaviest stuff possible without breaking much of a sweat, and still be something you can park in your driveway and not a commercial lot. While a very capable machine from the factory, DPP decided they needed to add a few upgrades to the company rig.

Guys name trucks. It’s just something that many of us do. But what do you name an already monster of a workhorse that you plan to improve upon? Well… Atlas was the Titan god who carried the weight of the sky upon his shoulders, and he personified the quality of endurance, so…

Built entirely in-house, the plan for Atlas was to create a truck that could do anything ever asked of it, while carrying passengers anywhere they needed to go. What’s more, since this would be more than a work truck, it needed to do it with style.

A good foundation is a requirement for any sound build, so, the front Dana Super 60 axle is now suspended by a Carli 3-1/2-inch lift with King 2.5 shocks. The rear M300 Dana utilizes a Kelderman airbag system with a four-link. The large-by-huge tires would surely make steering when barely moving a trying endeavor, so a Kryptonite Death Grip Steering Kit was thrown into the mix.

According to DPP, “with the added lift height, larger wheels and tires, and general abuse we would be delivering to the truck, stronger steering was a must. Don’t get us wrong, the factory stuff isn’t all that bad for a factory truck, but it doesn’t hold its weight once you start modifying the suspension and steering. Kryptonite has come up with an excellent solution for this with an extremely heavy-duty steering setup. With the addition of this kit, we don’t have to strong-arm the steering wheel to get the truck to turn. All the power put out by the steering box goes straight to the ground and makes steering/driving this truck a breeze. We’re already going to be working hard with the truck, no reason to work hard in the truck too.”

Rounding out the underpinnings of this Titan F-450, both differentials feature Nitro Gear 6.17: ring-and-pinions. If that seems like a lot of gear, it is. However, they match nicely with the 43-inch Continental MPT tires.

Fitting a 43-inch tire under a pickup — even an F-450 is no easy feat. To get those rollers mounted properly, Diesel Power Products worked with DBL Designs to create the forged 20-inch wheels — and the rear “super single” conversion. DBL also updated Atlas with front fenders and bumper that were paint matched.

The Power Stroke is no stranger to delivering a bunch of torque, but DPP wanted more. However, adding power means increased engine temps and EGTs. To get the wanted increase of power but keep temps in check, a No Limit Fabrication air-to-water intercooler replaces the factory unit. Atlas also breathes through an S&B cold air intake. Other than that, the engine was left largely stock. Behind that mill is a 10R140 transmission.

With the powertrain and suspension upgrades handled, the DPP crew was able to focus on upgrading the bed. The talented fabricators at DPP get to work making the aluminum bed from scratch. And if you are going to build a bed from scratch, make it useful. To do just that, they incorporated multiple tie-down anchor points using Mac’s Tie Downs tracks on the top and sides of the deck.

Check out any modified truck on the road, and you’re bound to see aftermarket lighting. Now, DPP was not concerned with creating a rolling light show. This is a truck that earns its keep, so lighting is all function. Forward-facing ZROADZ Hood Hinge Brackets mount auxiliary lighting which affords enhanced visibility by getting the light source further off the ground (think old-school roll bar), all while offering a unique appearance.

The Baja Designs LP9 LED lights offer up 11,025 lumens per housing. For those keeping count, that’s a total of 44,000-plus lumen from four lights, obviously not including the factory headlights and fog lights. Next are the Baja Designs XL80 LED lights. Just because they might need to see what’s under the truck at some point, Baja Designs Rock Lights are employed.

Finally, the N-Fab Bumper Light Mount supports four lights to the front bumper, and with all the lighting turned on, there is nothing that can hide from Atlas.

Remember, this is a truck designed around function. For that reason, an ARB Twin Air Compressor is hardwired and ready to inflate tires, airbags, or even a beach ball if, for some reason, a beach ball would need to be inflated.

There is a lot more to this F-450 named Atlas, and all you need to do is check out the Diesel Power Products webpage to all there is to this Titan of a truck. You can also check out a video of the Atlas build here.
