SEMA 2016: C&R Racing Brings Race Technology To The Street

CRracingSEMA2016-11Usually, when you hear the adage about “win on Sunday, sell on Monday,” you’re really talking apples to oranges. A car company that puts a car on the racetrack is not going to sell you anything more than the reputation come Monday morning – not the car that won the day before.

But when C&R Racing tells us that they take what they learn from the track and apply it to your street driven musclecar, you can believe that you’re getting more than just a reputation; you’re getting experience, technology, and results that are winning races during the weekend.

This latest technology from C&R Racing happens to be the same technology that is used in NASCAR and Formula 1, and it’s available for your street driven car or truck. It comes to us with the new extruded core radiator technology that C&R has developed for the track.

The extruded core technology puts up to a dozen passages in a single radiator tube that not only adds strength but eliminates swelling, too. We spoke with Roger Rosebush at C&R Racing and he explained how this technology works. “There are three factors that matter when it comes to cooling: size, fluid flow, and air flow,” he said. “You can have too much airflow, as well as too little airflow, and both can be a problem. The same applies to fluid flow, you don’t want the coolant moving too fast or too slow through the radiator.”

“My biggest challenge is how well can I direct airflow through a radiator,” he continued. Extensive testing is done to see where the hot spots are on a radiator, and where there isn’t enough flow. It’s not always about the size of the core, but since C&R makes its own radiator cores, it is a starting point. Rather than pull a standard size core, they make one to fit your application.

By testing for hot spots in the core, changes can be made in the design that will direct fluid to other parts of the radiator for a more even and consistent flow. Another factor that hinders airflow is the fin design, which can cause overheating. Conventional radiator designs have “V” shaped fins and that can cause turbulence and disrupt airflow.

C&R designs and builds its own radiator fins and use more of a rounded shape on the fins that allow better airflow, with no turbulence as the air passes through. The folded leading-edge on the fins also add strength to keep them from flexing while air is passing through at high speeds.

By testing flow and core size to get the best cooling system for racing, that technology is brought to every radiator or fluid cooler for street use, because the only cooling system worth having on any vehicle is an efficient one. That’s why NASCAR and Formula 1 drivers can be confident that their cooling system is performing at its best, and now you can be confident, too.
