It seems that one thing that never gets old at car shows is the burnout contest. While we have seen this traditional contest evolve over the years, the one thing that hasn’t changed about it is the amount of smoke that engulfs the car, the crowd, and the scene. Some people just love to stand there and be amongst the best smoke that the day has to offer. Personally, the bratwurst stand is a little bit better smelling, but you can’t deny the awesomeness of a burnout done well.
A real burnout contest, and this is just personal opinion, is one where you actually do the burnout yourself. That is to say, it’s not a burnout where your car is hog tied to clamps in the pavement, or where there are wheel chocks to keep you from moving forward. The kind of burnout that shows everyone that you’re not an amateur, you know how to do a burnout with just you, your brake pedal, the go-stick and some stinky rubber that you generously lay down on the pavement.
At the Mopar Nats this year, one thing you will notice is that the car pulling up to the burnout area is not your typical muscle car. This tunaboat sized 1972 Dodge Monaco was piloted by Mike Drone, of Columbus, OH, where he won the burnout contest that day. By the amount of smoke that Drone pours out, it’s amazing that he didn’t bust a tire or two.
We were curious, so we looked into this Monaco’s burnout history since the video stated that he won last year. Not only was he the Saturday winner last year, but he won in 2010, 2008 and 2007, and brought home second place in 2009. There’s something about a Mopar with a 413 mill doing burnouts that doesn’t get old, and for the past several years, this old Mopar has been smoking!
