Dennis Breeden Determined Heading Into NMCA World Street Finals

While Dennis Breeden was racing in NHRA A/Stock Automatic in his 2010 Drag Pak Challenger, he decided to dive into NMCA Coan Engineering Stock/Super Stock Combo when the category was created three years ago.

In that time, he has only missed one event, and he has been successful. He secured a third place finish in points in 2017, and a second place finish in points in 2018 in his car which is powered by a 6.1L Hemi which was freshened over the winter by 1 Way Technologies and a 904 by CTR Racing Transmissions.

The Plainville, Indiana-based driver has also been holding his own this year in the handicapped breakout eliminator category based off NHRA and IHRA Stock and Super Stock categories where drivers qualify based on how far under their class index they can run.

He qualified in the fourth spot with a 9.45 on a 10.65 index and lost in first round with a 9.40 on a 9.45 at the series’ season-opening 17th Annual NMCA Muscle Car Mayhem in March at Bradenton Motorsports Park in Florida, and he qualified in the sixth spot with a 9.41 on a 10.65 index and lost in the first round with a 9.49 on a 9.44 at the 11th Annual Scoggin-Dickey Parts Center NMRA/NMCA All-Star Nationals presented by Mahle in April at Atlanta Dragway.

He heated up from there, and qualified in the tenth spot with a 9.46 on a 10.65 index and earned a runner-up finish against Scott Libersher with a 9.43 on a 9.44 at the Inaugural Comp Cams NMCA Memphis Homecoming in May at Memphis International Raceway.

“Making it to the final round of eliminations at the race in Tennessee helped me get into the top ten in points, so that was very good,” said Breeden, who was determined to push toward the top from that point on.

After that, he qualified in the eleventh spot with a 9.47 on a 10.65 index and advanced to the quarterfinal before turning on the red light at the 14th Annual Nitto NMRA/NMCA Super Bowl of Street Legal Drag Racing in July at Route 66 Raceway in Illinois.

“The car had been no problem, but I realized around that time that I needed to make sure I had gotten red lights and misjudging the stripe out of my system if I wanted to keep going in the right direction,” said Breeden.

By qualifying in the eleventh spot with a 9.43 on a 10.65 index and making it to the third round of eliminations before losing with a 9.46 on a 9.47 at the 18th Annual NMCA All-American Nationals in August at Summit Motorsports Park in Ohio, he moved up to the second spot in points.

Now, Breeden, whose crew includes his wife, Jackie Breeden, and Alan White, is preparing for the final event on this year’s NMCA tour, the 18th Annual NMCA World Street Finals, Sept. 19-22, at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indiana. There, he hopes to take the NMCA Coan Engineering Stock/Super Stock Combo season championship, but he knows he will have his work cut out for him.

“There are three or four of us who could earn the championship, and I’m sure going to try to pull it off,” said Breeden, who also currently competes in NHRA Factory Super Stock/H. “It will be very hard, though. It’s a tough class with a lot of good drivers.”
