After competing for three years in X275 and running into a performance wall due to his chosen inline cast head small-block Ford engine combination, Don Lamana decided to explore other opportunities and upgrade his setup. The new Limited Drag Radial class was forming and after some discussion with Eric Dillard from Pro Line Racin,g Don decided to go with a PLR 632 fed by a pair of the Precision GENII 88 mm turbos on gasoline and make the move.
The same 1991 Mustang he was running in X275 would get stripped down for the full treatment, with cage and chassis upgrades to a double framerail design and a big diet, sourcing a carbon nose and tubs from Feather Carbon, along with some other accessories. The build would take place in-house at Pro Fab Performance Plus, and the team there is thrashing to get the nine month build completed by Saturday before heading to SGMP for testing.
The engine features a crank and rods from Bryant Racing with Diamond Racing Pistons and is topped with Brodix 14.5-degree Chevy heads, a Hogan’s Racing manifold gets air from a Wilson Manifolds billet throttle body hooked to a Tim McCamis pedal assembly. Lamana contacted Joe Rivera at Pro Torque for a new spec EV1 series billet converter and Mark Micke at M&M Transmissions upgraded and outfitted the transmission as needed for the new combo and additional horsepower. Don is also using a new shifter from M&M which is just getting into production.
A PST carbon drive shaft transfers the power back to a Racecraft Inc. rear housing filled with Moser internals. Strange Engineering drag brakes handle the stopping with Weld Racing wheels wrapped in Mickey Thompson rubber all around. Santhuff shocks and struts control suspension movement.
Wade Hopkins from Southern Speed Racing will be on the keyboard tuning the car using Haltech engine management. Derive Efficiency’s Adam Peeling, formerly of Haltech and MMR is wiring the car. The car is getting wrapped with design work from Jeff at Salvato Designs with printing and install handled locally by Aloha Wraps and Shiny Concepts.
