It’s taken him thirteen years to get it, but Texan “Dyno” Joe Cram finally took home his first Wally over the weekend at the NMRA/NMCA Lone Star Shootout in Houston, Texas at the Royal Purple Raceway. The proprietor of DynoJoe Performance, a Houston-based performance shop, has been a longtime competitor in the Ford racing scene, competing in both Fun Ford Weekend and NMRA over the years along with many NHRA events. Cram hasn’t been out much this year, but got his trusty 2006 silver Mustang GT back together for this race. Cram’s Mustang features an Edelbrock E-Force Supercharger, Circle D Specialties 4R70W transmission and torque converter, and MagnaFlow exhaust system.

As the car is a consistent low-ten-second performer, Cram was forced to slow it down a bit to compete in the 10.50 division of the Index Rumble class. “The car was running consistent 10.30’s on Friday and Saturday, so we added weight and got it to run some seriously consistent 10.50’s for our 10.50 index,” Cram explained. Competing against 19 other cars in the class, Cram was up against some of the heavy hitters in the Texas area. In the first round, he strapped a .009 light on local racer Blaine King, turning in the win thanks to his stellar reaction time. He came right back around for the second round and put up a .008 light on Arkansan Kevin Stubbs, then took out Jeff Miller in the third round by pushing him across the stripe to earn his way to the semifinal. There, he had the competition bye into the final round, where he’d match up against deadly racer and longtime friend Paul Gamino.

“He left first with a .053 light and I gave chase with a .102 light and caught him early, then played the top end and took the win, the money and the Wally with a 10.531 on a 10.50 Index. It’s taken me more than 13 years of racing to try and win one of these. Last year I came up short to Kent Nine at the same race, losing in the final. It was very emotional for me – my first Wally, at home at my home track!” he said.
