There are a great many famous racing Mustangs since the pony car first debuted in 1964. Some of those have survived the intervening decades, but most race cars were discarded after their best days were behind them. Most of them were ravaged of their engines and other racing bits, the bodies crushed and gone forever. A lucky few have survived…and command a premium on the auction circuit.

Up on eBay we came across one of 13 1965 Mustang A/FX dragsters, with “stacks” of documentation. Bidding is already well over the $200,000 mark, and the reserve hasn’t been met. How high will it go?

The auction claims that this Mustang is one of 13 delivered to Holman Moody right off the showroom floor to be converted into a Factory Experimental class racer. Among the many, many modifications was a 427 Wedge motor, before a SOHC “Cammer” V8 was fitted in its place. The winning bidder gets both engines. It was raced by Bob Hamilton, and is one of just five such cars left.

Other modifications include moving the rear end forward 2%, and completely removing the front shock towers (to fit the extra-wide engine). The fenders, hood, and doors are all fiberglass, and the windshield is plexiglass. In short, this is the real deal, a factory race car that has survived intact and with complete documentation. A piece of racing history. The only question is…how much will it sell for?
