Flashback Friday: The Burnout Heard Round The World

Photos By: Speedzone Magazine

If you’re a real nutcase Fuel Altered fanatic…kinda like we are…there is no greater satisfaction to be had in all the cosmos than this. The most talked about run of the year…perhaps decade..(And thus century!) was not a run at all, but rather the crossed up, over the top, lane swapping burnout performed by Iron Mike Boyd in Mousie’s pride and joy, the Winged Express at this year’s CHRR.

By now you’ve read all the accounts of this act of nitro gymnastics, and seen the stunning side by side comparison shots of both Boyd and Wild Willie striking the same sideways poses 41 years apart, but the back story on that classic vintage Bob Mcglurg shot is a headfull all by itself.

Mike Boyd did a classic sideways burn out in the Winged Express, but then crossed the centerline, drove around his competitor, went back to his lane to back up for his run like it was nothing abnormal.

It was taken during the first round of Super Eliminator at the 1969 Winternationals…but it should not have been. See, even then, the almighty AA/FA was too bad an actor to have its own official class, and so these nitro swilling bronco busters were just slipped into any part of the program they would fit. Usually this meant handicap start sportsman classes. At this particular event however Mousie and Willie entered the Wing as a Top Fuel Dragster…and actually qualified…on the bump, with a career best 7.29. To punctuate this landmark of epic coolness, the tiny, 354 powered T Bucket actually put Big Daddy himself out of the show. Amazing!

Well, maybe too amazing. At a last minute drivers meeting on Sunday night, a petition was passed amongst the other 31 Top Fuel qualifiers, and a unanimous decision to banish the evil altered and reinstate Garlits and his conventional slingshot was made. Sour grapes of the highest order! And thus the Wing was demoted to Super eliminator. The famous McGlurg shot was taken Monday morning as the Wing lost its first round match in spectacular, timeless, historic fashion.
