We hate to see videos like this. Poised against a gold and black-Yenko-striped Nova at the Dallas Raceway, John Mathis’ slippery silver ’69 Camaro touting a helluva small block plant leapt out of the hole, spun the tires something fierce, breaking loose. Driver Cedric Ingram – held in it a little more before realizing that the Camaro was pushing itself out of shape and into the left-hand barrier.
Colliding violently with the wall, the F-Body ricocheted across the width of the track and rammed squarely head-on into the right-hand rail, bringing the Camaro to dead stop. Thankfully, Ingram was fine, walking away from the wreck with a huge bruise on his left knee and some bruised ribs. Sadly the Camaro was a total loss, as the twin impacts rippled with car from nose to tail.
The 18th of September of last year, was simply a bad day to be Mathis as he was going to drive the Camaro that night, but broke his collar bone earlier. But there is some good news. Amazingly, the powertrain survived unscathed. The motor and trans are now in a different car and readying for the track. The car hit so hard that the steering column had been pushed back towards the driver, but Ingram’s grip on the wheel literally folded the wheel backwards!
