With a lot of help from many people, some of whom Eric Kenward didn’t even know, he got the opportunity to show his stuff at the Yellowbullet Nationals held at the Cecil County Dragway in Maryland over the weekend. The familiar Malibu wagon that Kenward competed in at last year’s race was back at home in Florida undergoing work to make it more competitive, so he loaded up his Mustang and headed North. Thus, providing us a chance to take a closer look at this X275 Mustang and what makes it tick.
X275 and True 28 x 10.5″ tire classes are the stomping grounds for this nitrous-inhaling 1991 Mustang LX. Kenward and company run this car all over the Southeast and as far north as Maryland. The engine is a 438 cubic inch Lewis Performance Machine-built small block Ford, sporting two Wilson Nitrous Fogger Systems spraying through the Wilson manifold and powerful Blue Thunder 4.3 cylinder heads. Spaghetti Menders Wiring banking system controls the nitrous systems just like the Pro Modified cars. The car rides on Holesot Wheels, features a full TRZ suspension, and AA Performance’s new state of the art K-member.
FTI built the transmission and converter that have propelled this car to a best of a 1.13 sixty-foot time with a nitrous plate system. With the fogger system, it’s gone 1.19 sixty foot and has run 5.0’s in the 1/8 mile thus far.
Finances were low and many people on the Yellowbullet.com forum stepped forward to help Eric make the trek up to Maryland for the Yellowbullet Nationals. Kenward said he’s blessed to have such a great bunch of friends and companies help him out while asking for nothing in return, and really wishes he could’ve given them better results. He qualified well at the No. 11 position out of 32 cars, but broke a pinion gear in the third round of qualifying and could only find a 3.73 gear set to install. That gave him just one pass to try and figure out how to make the car work with a different rear gear. He recorded a 5.45 at 138 mph in round one, but his opponent ran a quicker 5.30 at 138.
Stay tuned here to DRAGZINE, as we’ll be publishing an article highlighting some of the updates on Kenward’s Malibu Wagon in the near future.
