Jared Cocanougher’s 7-Second C5 Z06 Resets GM Stick Shift Record

A few months ago we did a story on Jared Cocanougher’s 1,600 horsepower stick shift C5 Z06 Corvette which had gone deep in the 8-second range in the 1/4-mile. Jared rebuilt the car over the winter and was finally able to get a few shakedown passes before heading to the track.

According to Jared, “This was the first outing with the car at what we felt was a 100-percent with the new combination.” While At Dragway 42 on June 21, 2019, Jared was able to better his previous time with a 7.99 at 190 mph! However, Jared and his team were not done. The next pass he was able to muster a 7.84 at 188.60. The final pass was the best of the day and would set the team as the current GM stick shift record by running a 7.8209 ET at 190.84 mph with his new combination. This pass beats out Garrett Mitchel’s previous record in Leroy the Savage which ran a 7.824 at 176.57 mph.

We ran 30-pounds of boost on that pass, so we think there is some more left. – Jared Cocanougher

When asked if the Z06 has more left in it Jared said, “We ran 30-pounds of boost on that pass, so we think there is some more left. We ran 40-42-pounds of boost in the previous combination, so naturally, we would like to get back in that range.”

The new engine combination for the 427 cubic-inch engine still utilizes some of the same parts that were in the previous engine. The engine still uses an LSX block which was o-ringed by Brian Tooley Racing (BTR), BTR heads, and CP Carrilo pistons. Brand-new for this year is a set of Precision Turbo Mirror Image Gen 2 7675’s, aluminum rods, a new Little Jon Motorsports (LJMS) spec’d camshaft, and the new BTR Equalizer intake manifold. Jared’s shop, Race Proven Performance took care of the 427 engine build while Tin Soldier Racecars took care of the turbo system fabrication.

The ‘Vette still has a lot of parts from last season as well including the Monster Clutch Co. triple disc clutch, RPM transmissions T56, G-Force gear set, and an RPM differential. With all of the same components, we asked Jared if he still has to adjust to the new combination. He said, “I’m still getting used to the new combination mainly the 2-step and making sure the car is in boost before it leaves.”

Considering this was the first solid outing for the car, we expect to see this monster continue to go deeper in the 7-second zone. Congratulations to Jared, his crew, Brian Tooley Racing, and Race Proven Performance on the new GM stick shift record.
