Jim Halsey has an extensive resume of Pro Mod victories that span many years, but the only thing missing is a series championship. The PDRA Pro Nitrous driver is on the cusp of winning his first title after a stellar season of racing, and he’s primed and ready to storm the PDRA World Finals castle in search of a victory and his first championship.
It has been a great year for Halsey overall, with three race wins during the course of the PDRA campaign. Those wins coupled with strong performances at other events have put him into position to win the Pro Nitrous title. All of this success didn’t just happen overnight, though, as Halsey and his team spent plenty of time getting ready for this season.
“We approached this season with a lot of preparation in our engine program over the winter. There were a lot of things we wanted to plan ahead on and have spare parts. We’ve run the whole year with the same engine, but we’ll have one for the World Finals, so we’re going to be prepared,” Halsey says.
There has been an increased level of dedication in his camp this year, and the offseason effort has been supplemented by a lot of work during the season by Halsey. He has been out testing more than a half a dozen times to perfect his combination during his off weeks from racing.
Going into the World Finals, Halsey doesn’t have the Pro Nitrous title fully locked up, but hat detail isn’t going to change anything, as he plans on pushing the pace as soon as qualifying starts.
“We’re going to approach this event like all the rest: try to qualify number one and win the race. Nothing is going to change for us at all. It’s going to be a fast field based on the performances we saw at the Fall Nationals. I wouldn’t be surprised to see someone run in the low 3.60s or high 3.50s if the weather is good,” Halsey explains.
With just 297 points separating himself from two-time Pro Nitrous champion Tommy Franklin, Halsey knows he will have to be on top of his game all weekend at the World Finals. The championship is within his grasp and he’s ready to add a Pro Nitrous title to his long list of accolades.
“It would mean everything to me to win the PDRA Pro Nitrous championship because I’ve never really won a season title before. I’ve won a lot of big races and had a successful career but this would make it a banner year. I won the 50th Anniversary U.S. Nationals, the Shakedown a few times, and the Yellow Bullet Nationals, but I’ve never been able to put that championship run together. It’s more important than anything for me right now. It takes a lot of luck to make all of it come together and make it happen,” Halsey says.
