Pasco, Washington native JR Carr recorded the quickest and fastest run in the history of Mountain Motor Pro Stock racing Friday at the Mopar ExpressLane NHRA Midwest Nationals to lead the class into eliminations following rain-shortened qualifying. Carr, in his RJ Race Cars-built 2020 Chevrolet Camaro, clocked a 6.179 at 228.23 mph, which not only established a new performance mark, but is also the first sub 6.2-second lap in the class’ history.

The Mountain Motor Pro Stock division, once a staple of the International Hot Rod Association program, has in recent years largely become an 1/8-mile program under the Professional Drag Racers Association (PDRA) umbrella, affording competitors little in the way of opportunity to advance the 1/4-mile records. You have to go back to October 3, 2010 at Englishtown to find the last entry in the elapsed time record book, when Pete Berner clocked a 6.209. Four years later, John DeFlorian went 226.70 mph at San Antonio’s Raceway to set the mile-per-hour side of the record.

Impressively, there has been just one 3-second 1/8-mile run in the history of mountain motor Pro Stock competition, and Carr nearly did it with a 1/4-mile setup, clocking a 4.021 at 180.74 mph to half-track on his 6.17 lap.
