Second-generation heads-up racer Kallee Mills cut her teeth behind the wheel of an X275 car, and now she’s making a big leap into the world of no-prep racing. Mills is joining her father, legendary Radial vs The World racer DeWayne Mills, in the big-tire class at the biggest no-prep race of the year: Outlaw Armageddon.
While learning the ropes of racing on a small-tire Mills proved to be an excellent student. She progressed quickly and that allowed her team to turn her Camaro up more and more each time she went to the track. Mills went from just a bottom-of-the-ladder qualifier to a legitimate threat during eliminations in her X275 racing career.
Taking the time to learn to drive a powerful small-tire car set Mills up for success when it came time to try her hand at big-tire no-prep racing. Even with the experience she gained, Mills understands that the Golden Kong Camaro is a whole different animal.
“It’s a lot different going from driving the X275 car to the big-tire no-prep car. It goes beyond just the tire size…the horsepower difference is pretty substantial, too. It’s been a learning experience trying to go faster…we actually had to slow the car down during testing on the slicker surface. With a small-tire car, it’s either going to stick or not stick; the big-tire car can be driven back into the groove and that’s different,” Mills says.
One of the big things that Mills has enjoyed about no-prep racing is the fan interaction. She has traveled with her father as part of the team to different events he’s competed in selling apparel. While on those trips, Mills was exposed to how excited fans were to see the team at these races. She’s also enjoyed the friendships that have come from the other teams in the no-prep world.
Mills is really looking forward to racing at Outlaw Armageddon for the first time. The event provides a unique environment for racing that makes it one of the most electrifying events in drag racing.
“I’ve gone to this race many times as a spectator, so it’s cool to finally go as a racer. The atmosphere is just crazy…there are tons of fans, and it’s in Oklahoma, so we get a lot of our fans that come out, too. Racing during the day and then hanging out at night afterward is a lot of fun. It’s a flashlight start so I’ll have to learn some of the tricks dad picked up last year. But we’re excited to go and race against the best in no-prep,” Mills explains.
