Dirt, dust, gravel, and even sand in the air are a very much unwanted but ever-present evil when at the racetrack, and it doesn’t take an engine builder or engineer to explain that foreign in a racing engine is a recipe for disaster. Many drag racers, however, often go commando and navigate up and down the dragstrips and return roads without an air filter, often due to the lack of compatibility with the air scoops used on both doorslammers and dragsters, as well as the minutely reduced air flow into the engine.
However, K&N Filters, a leader in racing air filter technology, are making the option of running an air cleaner more feasible than ever, with the release of their new high-flow air filters that are designed for the K&N Pro Stock composite hood scoops. The K&N Drag Racing Scoop Filter (Part # 28-4210) feature two filter elements to provide maximum airflow and protection, designed to fit scoop designs that are popular in today’s drag racing world. The filter fits inside both the 100-5606 and 100-8508 carbon fiber, D-shaped hood scoops that are commonly used in NHRA Pro Stock, as well as Super Stock, Super Gas, Top Sportsman, and Pro Modified.
Previously, racers had to use a filter that mounted over the carburetor, a standard air cleaner, a K&N Inner Liner, or nothing at all. But this new solution provides a much simpler new option for utilizing an air cleaner. And installation is simple; just attach the included lightweight carbon fiber brace across the the top end of the filter, aligning the opening of the filter base into the rounded lip of the opening of the hood scoop, then mounting the brace to the inside of the scoop. The air will flow over through the opening in the scoop, through the filter’s sides and top and then into the carburetor.
