Knocking On The 7’s: LMR’s 1,300 HP ‘Vette Resets C7 Record

Records are made to be broken and that is exactly what Late Model Racecraft (LMR) has accomplished with their latest quarter-mile visit. Their 2015 C7 Stingray reset the record in an impressive fashion last week with an elapsed time of 8.06-seconds at 170 mph. This performance far surpassed the C7’s previous record of an 8.80. According to Steven Fereday, owner of LMR, this car is now the world’s quickest and fastest C7 Corvette.

The 1300-plus horsepower combination features an LME 416 cubic-inch short-block outfitted with Callies crank, rods, and Diamond pistons. The heads and cam consist of LMR’s own Stage 3 package. The factory heads are milled and ported to LMR’s specs via CNC to increase the airflow to get air in and out of the engine. In March of this year the ProCharger F-1R was yanked from the power lant and replaced with the larger F-1X in search of the ever-elusive lower elapsed time and higher mile-per-hour. The LMR custom air-to-water intercooler handles the air cooling duties of the boosted air charge along with the help of a ProMeth dual nozzle injection. A simple Nitrous Express single nozzle system was put in place to give the ‘Vette a little more pep while rolling down the quarter-mile. While the system is maxed out at 200 horsepower, the increased speed is still very notable on the time slip.

LMR’s C7 Corvette Specs:

When you are making 1,400 horspower it’s always a good idea to beef up the drivetrain. This is where the crew at LMR went all-in. The factory 8L90-E 8-speed automatic transmission was ditched in order to make way for an ultra reliable two-speed Powerglide from RPM Transmissions. Fitted with a 4,000 rpm stall ProTorque convertor, this setup is all business. The factory rearend has also been removed in favor of a fabricated unit boasting beefy DriveShaft Shop axles. Naturally, the ECU had to be reprogrammed to get the Powerglide to work seamlessly in place of the 4L90-E.

These images will give you a pretty good idea of what was involved for the LMR crew with the driveline swap.

The LMR crew started working on the car in 2015 and in it’s previous combination, the Corvette would fly down the quarter with consecutive low 9-second passes without the use of the nitrous system. All of their hard work has produced the low 8-second pass but it hasn’t been without problems. Due to belt slippage, LMR is now making their own harmonic balancers and pulley setup to cure this power-robbing dilemma. According to Fereday, the results have been flawless and even with the larger ProCharger F-1X they have had no issues.

This killer-performing Corvette doubles a reliable street car with all of the original creature comforts. Fereday and his crew at Late Model Racecraft have certainly put together a recipe to annihilate previous records. With a record-setting pass in their back pocket, there is little doubt that this car will be back for a 7-second blast soon.
