New Dragstrip Enters Final Stages Of Construction in Mexico

The new Autodromo “cerro Colorado” is reported to be opening soon with an all-concrete 1/4-mile dragstrip that appears to rival many facilities here in the states.

The new facility is located in Molino de Camou, Sonora, Mexico. It is about 170-miles south of the United States/Arizona border at the border entry point near Tucson, Arizona.

These images are gleaned from their Autodromo “cerro Colorado” Facebook page which shows the concrete 1/4-mile track surface and completed concrete walls along with a spacious pit area, tower, restroom/concession building and grandstands.

When viewed as per the Google Maps overhead view, the ‘strip is nestled in a vast and barren region of the Mexico desert plains. That could bode well for a lack of encroachment or neighbor noise complaints.

Logistics for an interview with the ownership proved difficult due to the combination that they only speak Spanish and I, unfortunately, do not. We were fortunate enough to speak to Kurt Johnson of Total Venue Concepts who recently visited the track.

“The track surface is approximately 60-feet wide with a full 1/4-mile of concrete surface,” Johnson told us. “It is 3,900-feet in total length with a well-laid-out return road and pit area.” Johnson continued that management has quite a bit of detail work to finish with the infrastructure needed to put the track in operation, such as installation of a Port-A-Tree timing system.

The multiple partner/owners have a goal of opening soon. No specific date or any other specific details are provided on social media. They also indicated to Johnson that their initial focus is a local clientele of racers who already exist. There are some tracks present in the region, but none are of this caliber, which the owners hope will spell success for them.

The partners are looking into ways to draw racers and fans from stateside, but they are confident of their gameplan as well for a successful business model that includes an active local group of competitors. May Mexico grow into a hotbed of drag racing.
