Rick Wahl’s Ex-Pro Stock 1972 Dodge Colt

In the 1970s, Dodge rebranded the Mitsubishi Colt and marketed it to consumers concerned with gas mileage. They came from the factory with a four-banger in a 92-inch wheelbase. Dodge stretched them to just under 96 inches and stuffed them with 426 Hemis and Lencos to take advantage of the NHRA Pro Stock rules.

These short, little beasts were capable of running at the low end of 8-seconds at more than 160 MPH. Unfortunately, they handled more like fuel altereds than Pro Stockers. The short wheelbase and high center of gravity made them famously unstable and prone to wheelstand to the point of flipping.

Many of them crashed. In fact, Don Carlton was killed in one while testing tires in 1977. The NHRA soon banned them from Pro Stock-legal competition. They could still be seen on the match race circuit and at IHRA events, but eventually, these tiny terrors disappeared from the nation’s drag strips.

Rick Wahl takes this tiny Dodge Colt through the traps at nearly 136 mph in less than 10 seconds.

Rick Wahl, from Louisville, KY, runs God’s Speed Shop Ministries, traveling to drag strips to hold Sunday morning church services. Wahl found one of these infamous Pro Stockers and thought that it would make a great bracket racer. He calls his 1972 Dodge Colt “Narrow Way” and that describes the little 95.75-inch wheelbase hot rod perfectly. He brings the ex-Pro Stocker to do a little high-speed preaching on the quarter-mile asphalt after church is over.

Wahl likes to keep the shiny side up when he races, so he has toned his Colt down with a 360 small block under the hood. Sporting two four-barrel Holleys on a Weiand intake, it produces 530 hp and 525 ft-lb of torque. The Powerglide transmission hooks into a Dana rear end spinning 32-inch slicks. A Lamb strut front suspension makes for an easy-handling bracket car that runs 9.89 at almost 136 mph.

That’s plenty fast for bracket racing. Wahl enjoys the smooth ride and the attention that the car gets whenever he shows up. Don’t bother asking him if the Colt is for sale. He has no plans to get rid of it anytime soon.
