SGMP Officials Offer Reward For Overnight Break-In, Attempted Pass

South Georgia Motorsports Park (SGMP) track officials and Cook County Sheriff’s deputies are in search of a pair of men who brazenly broke into the raceway Friday night and attempted to make a test pass. Evidence left at the scene confirmed the pair were served an immediate dose of karma that track owner Raul Torres hopes will soon be elevated to an arrest and prosecution for their illegal outing.

Torres is offering a reward for the identities of the two he says cut the locks to the track’s south gate—intentionally avoiding the surveillance cameras positioned at the main entrance— and “made themselves right at home.” They pitted behind the tower—also out of view of cameras—and then proceeded to make a run down the track with what appears to be a black pickup truck , but not before the truck busted its transmission right on the starting line and dumped a large puddle of fluid. The two were captured on a camera affixed to the tower pushing away the leaking pickup before presumably loading up and fleeing.

“An accident like this can turn deadly in seconds if things go in a different direction while trespassing,” Torres says. “These guys shattered their transmission at the starting line, and if it had busted halfway down the racetrack and gotten under their tires, they could immediately lose control and crash. With no EMT or firefighters on-site, this can go south very fast. One blatant incident like this exposes the racetrack to a ton of legal issues if someone were to be killed due to their negligence.” Torres says insurance on a property like SGMP typically leaves the policy-holder responsible for injuries  24 hours a day, seven days a week, regardless of whether it is open to the public or a trespassing incident. For that reason, tracks have to be vigilant about keeping trespassers out to mitigate any potential responsibilities or legal exposure.

“I have a video of them doing a burnout in the waterbox. Then they pull forward to the starting line. Never did we think we needed cameras in the parking lot, but I guess we’ve learned our lesson and need more coverage throughout the property,” he continues.

“We’re coming for you,” Torres proclaims to those responsible. “Let’s make these guys famous as they can single-handedly put us in a terrible position if someone dies while racing here when we are closed. Protect our racetrack, and let’s find them. We have zero tolerance for this behavior.”
