The influx of the first-generation 1967-69 Camaro body in the Pro Modified and Top Sportsman realm has drawn the ire of many fans and racers in recent years as they often comprise the vast majority of many such categories. This is due primarily to the attention that chassis builders and body manufacturers have placed on the Camaro in creating an ultra lightweight, aerodynamic mold for these most of extreme race cars. But if Cynergy Composites has their way, a sleek new Blue Oval body may provide the fast doorslammer world some variety in the form of a very sleek ’67 Shelby GT500 body.
Cynergy, already with ’67, ’69 and 70.5 Camaro and ’68 Firebird bodies in their stable, began the conceptual phase of the Shelby body last November as Stu Wotypka at ID Motorsport Design created the concept in vector form. Doing so allowed the rendering to be drawn to scale – the actual wheelbase, overhang, widths, and roof height – so that cross-section spines could be cut for the master pattern. As Cynergy explains it, unlike many of the renderings that are commonly released, this body will look exactly as you see it in the drawing.
Cynergy Composites is currently making final adjustments on the body plug and the detailed molding process is slated to begin in the very near future. The team at Cynergy is working diligently to be certain that no short cuts are made during the molding process, as every fraction of a pound counts in this day and age of ultra light doorslammer bodies. And with improved tooling and molds in their arsenal, Cynergy is boasting this as the best best mold to date.
The final molding phase is expected to begin in August and the pre-order list is already said to be growing quickly, meaning it shouldn’t take long before we begin seeing this sharp GT500 bodies on the racetrack.
