Take a look under just about any vehicle and you’ll see that the factory has taken precautions to protect your vehicle from the excessive heat produced by the exhaust system. Without these shields the floor gets pretty warm, and in a classic musclecar with an aftermarket exhaust one hand on the floor will give you an idea of how much heat is transferred.
Many classic cars don’t have those shields at all, and when you upgrade your exhaust for more power and better flow, the heat that transfers from your muffler can increase as well. When you’re building a lowered or custom vehicle and you tuck that exhaust up under the car to keep things looking neat and uncluttered, you’re also putting the heat source closer to your floorboard.
Design Engineering, Inc., has a solution that can truly drop those floor temperatures by keeping the heat to the muffler, and reducing the amount of radiant heat it can generate. DEI’s Muffler Shield Kit is a 24×42 sheet of floor and tunnel material, a 10-mil aluminum sheet mated to insulation material. The kit is large enough to cover most aftermarket mufflers, and includes a set of stainless steel locking ties and a free locking tie tool.
The locking tie tool will make the installation of the ties much easier and allow you to achieve a more secure fit for the shield. We know DEI from popular auto parts stores where its products can protect hoses and cables, as well as reduce the radiant heat from headers and other high-heat components under your hood.
