SELECT COVERAGE BY DAY:

LO14-FRI

Friday here in Cecil, Georgia we are starting out wet. There was some heavy rain and wind this morning so I am working out of the hotel until the poor weather passes. We’ll get caught up some some news from the pits that didn’t get posted on Thursday along with some more things from qualifying. We expect the rain to clear out and leave us with nice weather the remainder of the weekend. Check back for the latest news from Lights Out V.

A special thanks to our new event coverage presenting sponsor, Comp Cams! To learn more about Comp, as well as their many industry-renowned brands, via their home on the web at compcams.com.

I met the number one qualifier Shawn Pevlor and his crew chief "Cheeseburger" having breakfast at the hotel this morning and spoke with them about the car. It's a got a BES 438 small block with Kevin Neal setting up the nitrous system. The power is transferred through a Bradco converter to a Extreme Automatics transmission with the chassis from Rogue Race Cars out of Williamsbug, Ohio. Pevlor is yet another racer that fought through snowy weather up north to get here. Shawn normally runs Outlaw 8.5 races at Kilkare. Photo courtesy: Cheeseburger.

Mary has the only two aluminum blocks Chrysler made for these heads. Since Mopars are different anyway he swapped from his W8 combo as he didn’t feel it would have enough to compete with cars running 4.60’s. Originally designed around an F1X Procharger then converted to a turbo after the F1X was disallowed for his combo.  He currently runs a Precision large frame 88 but is considering the F1X again for later this year depending on how competitive the car is like this. The car has been a 4.78 so far with more left and he has swapped to a three speed from Dave Klayput at Proformance, PTC converter and changed the rear gear accordingly.

Barry Lutz took some time off after a wheel stand in 2010 that caused some real damage including tweaking the frame on his 1971 Chevelle. This is his first time back out with the car which has been updated to a 25.3 chassis by Tim Webb from Webb Racecraft in Topeka, Kansas. TRZ Motorsports supplied their entire A Body catalog for the rebuild. The engine is the same conventional head 540 big Chevy from Driskell Enterprises in Wellsville, Kansas and tuned by Cal Hartline. It’s backed by a two speed 400 and converter from M&M Transmissions. Other sponsors include Mac Fab, Menscer Motorsports, TRZ Motorsports, Accufab Inc., 187 Graphics, Jakes Performance and Fabrication, CFM Performance, Component Drive Services, Mickey Thompson and a special thanks to Jason Ruekert at VP Race Fuels. He sits nineteenth in Mac Fab Outlaw 275 with a 4.85 at 147 MPH, a personal best ET.

Yesterday afternoon he put in a call to Chris Nelson to see if he could get one of the other fat Boy racing engines together to make the race. The man of the hour is "The" Kevin Mullins who already proved his record setting performance with his 4.16 on Thursday. Everyone here was anticipating him to back it up and he did that and more with a 4.117 at 193.90. Though his 4.165 isn't enough to back up the 4.11 everyone knows it's coming soon with the track and weather conditions this weekend.

David Measel recently purchased one of Ricky Fox’s Mustangs and is running Outlaw Drag Radial here this weekend.  He was on a run and climbed the ring gear hard when the power came on towards 100 feet out making him another racer to “fly” here at SGMP riding the wing before coming down hard past the 330 and keeping it off the wall. Thanks again to Hans from Free Life Films for letting us use the video in our coverage. We will have more coming of Dwayne Mills, Kevin Mullins and Mark Micke.
