VRETTOS, GAUDAGNO, NEAL, HEADS UP WINNERS AT NO MERCY
Alex Vrettos headed up the winners list at the highly anticipated No Mercy showdown at the South Georgia Motorsports Park over the weekend, taking Radial vs. The World honors after a long weekend of exciting heads-up drag racing. ORTC: Same Day Coverage on DRAGZINE. Alex Vrettos earned the Radial vs. The World crown at the highly anticipated No Mercy showdown at the South Georgia Motorsports Park over the weekend, ultimately taking the win in a final in which neither driver could make the call for. Jason Black bested Kenny Markwich for the Outlaw Radial crown, 4.47 to 5.27, while Richie Stine took an all-Maryland finale in No Boost, defeating Francis Johnson, 4.56 to a slowing 5.07. In the largest field at the event, it was new X275 record holder Kevin Neal and teammate Justin Johnson facing off the crown Sunday evening, with Neal taking an easy 4.81 victory as Johnson ran into troubles. Rob Wells defeated Danny Lowry in the Outlaw 10.5 finale, and Bobby Flippin drove to the first Leaf Spring Shootout title in his S-10 pickup, defeating Ron Rhodes in the final.
NHRA: Rookies Vincent Nobile and Hector Arana Jr. continued to make a splash at the Firebird Raceway in Phoenix over the weekend, as the second generation racers both captured victories in their respective categories. Nobile defeated Allen Johnson for his third Pro Stock win on the season, a holeshot-aided 6.67 to 6.65, while Arana Jr. clipped a perfect reaction time and ran away from Matt Smith for a 6.88 to 6.94 win. Larry Dixon earned his second win of the year over points leader Antron Brown, 3.95 to 3.96, and in the process, moved himself up to second in the Countdown standings. NHRA Division 2: The NHRA South Central Division NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series closed its season at the Silver Dollar Raceway in Georgia over the weekend, as Bill Reichert took the Top Alcvohol Dragster crown over championship challenger Duane Shields, 5.35 to 5.43, while Mickey Ferro bested Todd Veney in the Top Alcohol Funny Car finale, 5.64 to 5.73. Jim Kimbrough took his dragster to the winners circle in Competition Eliminator, edging the H/SMA Grand Am of Grant Lewis. NHRA Division 4: Michale Manners ran down Brandon Pierce in the Top Alcohol Dragster final at the rain-delayed South Centreal division meet at the Thunder Valley Raceway in Oklahoma, running a 5.41 to Puerce’s 5.54. Colorado native Roger Bateman defeated veteran Vern Moats for the Top Alcohol Funny Car title, while Bruno Massel took his Chevy Cobalt to the winners circle in Competition eliminator with a final round defeat of Kevin Self. IHRA TOC: The IHRA crowned its sportsman champions at the Summit Racing Equipment Tournament of Champions in Virginia over the weekend. J.B. Donati earned the right to carry the #1 on his Top Dragster entry be downing Austin Cowan in a winner-take-all final, while Glenn Wright did likewise in Top Sportsman as opponent Al Burkett left just .004 too soon. Phil Combs won the Stock Eliminator championship in a close defeat of Brent Darroch, and Barry Ryan used a killer .008 package to taker the Quick Rod crown.
