Over the weekend, the first photos of the long-awaited twin turbo Ford Mustang from Roger Burgess’ R2B2 Racing team surfaced on the internet, and to the surprise of absolutely no one, tuner Steve Petty, driver Eric Dillard, and the R2B2 crew already have the new Mustang flying.
In a private test and tune session on Tuesday at the Atlanta Dragway near the R2B2 and Pro Line Racing facilities, Dillard, a veteran engine builder and accomplished heads-up doorslammer pilot, pushed the newest entry from Burgess’ stable to a killer 5.91 at 248.34 MPH in it’s very first outing.
The session opened with a stellar 1.00 short time from the big block, twin turbo, automatic transmission-equipped Mustang before Dillard clicked it off and coasted through. The team returned just before dusk and reeled off a 4.00-second clocking at 194 MPH to the eight-mile, before taking it through the boards on the third pass to the tune of a 6.003 at 232.63 MPH, just missing the fives on its first-ever quarter mile pass. On the final run of the evening, Dillard carded the aforementioned 5.914, serving notice that they’re ready to play.
