The folks at the Thunder Valley Raceway in Oklahoma are taking this no prep stuff dead-serious.
Thunder Valley, well renowned by this point as the “home track” of the cast of Discovery Channels’ Street Outlaws, has earned quite a reputation of late for its no prep-style racing — namely with its now-annual Outlaw Armageddon event featuring all the top runners from the around country. But the track is by no means an outlaw facility, nor is it catered to no prep racing. An NHRA member track, it hosts a whole schedule of E.T. bracket racing, an NHRA Division 4 Lucas Oil Series race, and a host of other events.
But for the next few weeks, until some fresh new rubber is laid down, Thunder Valley is going to be as no-prep as a race track gets. In fact, hooking up on it will be akin to laying the power on a sidewalk or concrete driveway.
This week, track officials are steel shotblasting the entire racing surface to remove years of rubber buildup, inconsistencies, and oil pan divots on the rubber, to provide fresh palette for the new year. But before they go dragging the track and bringing the surface back to life for regular drag racing activities, they’re going to hold a true no prep race, called Conquer The Concrete, with $20,000 in total payouts to Big Tire, Small Tire, and True Street class racers. As the flyer puts it, “anything closer to the street and it would be illegal” — an obvious reference to the tracks’ consistency to a bare stretch of road.
The race will take place on February 27, and there’s no question that it’ll be dicey for those willing to take a shot at the fresh Thunder Valley 1/8-mile.
