If a list exists of “things that you don’t see at a drag race very often”, a roots-supercharged Jeep Cherokee is probably somewhere near the top. but, that’s precisely what ingenious individual invested his time, money, and effort into.
This truly one-of-a-kind 1985 Jeep Cherokee two-door, as you can see by the images, isn’t your old man’s canoe carrier. Stretched a full 12 inches to give it a more ‘racey’ wheelbase, it sits on a full mild steel, Funny Car cage-equipped chassis, with lexan windows, a rear wing, and everything you’d expect on the exterior of a legitimate race car.
Underneath, though, is where it gets interesting. Because, well, a 2.5L four-banger just wouldn’t fit the bill. Instead, the owner has shoved a 440 cubic-inch Chrysler (worth a kudos for staying within the family) stage IV motor from Indy Cylinder Head, topped with a 14:71 Littlefield high-helix roots supercharger and a ‘bug catcher’ injector and fired by a Mallory magneto ignition. It’s back up by a whole spec sheet of quality parts, including a Hughes Performance Powerglide, JW case, a Pro Tree transbrake, and more.
The Jeep, as you’d expect, has been set up with a four-link rear suspension, an aluminum driveshaft, fire system, full disc brakes, and 10.5W slicks.
Interestingly, the engine has never been fired, nor has the Jeep ever been down the race track, so what’s being offered is truly a brand spanking new, unproven, but completely awesome project. How quick and fast will it go? That’s anyone guess. But, believe it or not, it will have some competition in the Jeep market, as a 7-second X275 Jeep, and at least a couple of 8-second Jeeps exist here in the United States.
