Jet dragster pilot Daniel Miocevich might’ve been the luckiest person in all of Australia this weekend as he walked away unharmed from a frightening accident at almost 275 mph while racing at the Perth Motorplex.
Miocevich was making exhibition runs in his “Aftershock” dragster at Perth’s Drag Racing Grand Final event when he crashed at the conclusion of a 5.49-second, 273 mph pass under the lights — the car making an immediate turn to the right at the stripe and crossing in front of the other car, spinning around and striking the guardrail with the undercarriage of the chassis before going over the wall and tumbling to a stop.
The dragster chassis — which are often twisted and broken into multiple segments in crashes far less significant — took the high-speed impact surprisingly well, allowing Micovech to miraculously climb from the car under his own power before safety personnel arrived. Miocevich let the crowd know he was A-ok after the incident, waving from the back of the ambulance as he was transported to the on-site medical facility for observation. He was later released without nary a scratch.
Daniel’s father Gary, who passed away in 2015, helped in the construction of the Perth Motorplex, and as some have said following the incident, the father was still keeping an eye out for his son — interestingly enough, on Daniel’s birthday.
