Somehow Mopars have sort of become one of those love ’em or hate ’em brands. As unbiased as we try to be, a cool car is a cool car no matter who’s nameplate is on the fenders, and when we laid our eyes at this twin turbo ’66 Coronet, we couldn’t help but dig it. Not only is it something different, the Coronet has some cool body lines despite the rather large headlights the ’66 model year had.
We first found out about this classic ride through a post by LP Racing over on Yellowbullet.
LP Racing is bringing this all steel Mopar some power levels that were unheard of back in the days of the muscle car wars. Under the hood will be a 440″ Wedge motor with a multitude of parts from Indy, getting a big power boost from a set of twin GT47-88mm Turbos feeding into a CSU Blow-thru carb. We hinted drag radial already – out back will be a set of 315 Mickey Thompson radials.
Best of all, this Coronet won’t just be a trailer queen that sits idle in the shop corner for weeks at a time awaiting its next race venue, it’ll also see action as a cool weekend toy to take out on the street for a cruise. Big Block plus twin turbos usually doesn’t equal a street car, but we’re glad this owner is taking the plunge to make it just that. Ain’t nothing wrong with an all-steel 2000+ HP monster prowling the streets, in fact, it’s downright sinister – one cool Mopar that all can appreciate. LP Racing told us they’d keep the updates coming as progress on this Coronet continues.
