Despite the many major “street legal” and “street car” drag racing series and standalone events that are out there, the whole concept of actual street-able vehicles that could make a seven or eight second pass just as easily as they could drive to the grocery has been largely lost. But if there’s a single defining event in the world of street legal drag racing – and perhaps in the entire grand scheme of the sport – it’s Hot Rod Magazine’s Drag Week.
Earlier this week, the Hot Rod team gave the public a sneak peak at the 2012 Drag Week schedule, which will once again bring the finest street machines in America and from around the globe together right in the heart of the nation.
Drag Week 2012 will run from September 9-14, and will actually kick off at a track that was recently on it deathbed. The Tulsa Raceway Park in Tulsa, Oklahoma will serve as the starting point with the first day of competition, followed by a trip south to Billy Meyer’s Texas Motorplex in Ennis, Tex. outside of Dallas. Day three will take the rolling convoy of horsepower to the Thunder Road Raceway Park in Gilliam, La. before heading northeast to the newly rechristened Memphis Motorsports Park in the land of Elvis Presley. To conclude the week, competitors will embark on a 400 mile cruise from Tennessee to Oklahoma, right back where it all started four days earlier in Tulsa.
Like last year, a number of highly touted challengers are expected to tackle Drag Week, not just to Larry Larson’s overall champion title, but in each of the wide-ranging number classes? Might this be the year we finally see an all-six second performance at Drag Week? We can’t wait to find out.
