Radial-tire drag racing has plenty of top-level teams with a loose association with one another through tuners or parts, but it’s rare for them to fully join forces. That poses an interesting question: what if two of these teams did link up to form a supergroup of horsepower? We’re about to find out in a unique way as DeWayne Mills and Daniel Pharris have joined forces to take on no-prep racing.

Both Mills and Pharris have impressive resumes behind the wheel of a small-tire car over the past few seasons. Pharris has branched out into Pro Modified racing and been able to adapt to big-tire racing at a high level quickly. When word got out that Mills was building a no-prep car people took notice — when he brought Pharris on they started to get worried.

It wouldn’t be a DeWayne Mills racecar if it wasn’t a first-generation Camaro. The no-prep weapon that he and Pharris will take turns driving is a 1968 model with a steel roof and quarters built by Larry Jeffers Race Cars. Under the hood is a Pro Line 481x with twin Precision 88mm turbos, backed by an M&M Transmission TH400.

“Daniel came onboard after he called me up and said he had an engine for the car if we partnered up and I let him drive it, too. That’s how this came about … we both wanted to have some fun racing no-prep. I don’t have a problem being on the starting line when he whips everybody, because that’s where the party will be. When you’re driving the car you’re at the top end by yourself with the loser,” Mills says.

For Mills, the idea of getting into no-prep racing really wasn’t that far-fetched. The big issue was having a car set up to compete in no-prep. His radial tire Camaro wasn’t a good fit at all for the tuning required to get a no-prep car down the track so a specific build was required for the task.

“I never wanted to race the radial car on a no-prep surface because it was set up totally wrong. I built a car that’s more like a no-prep car with the right percentages with this Camaro. We have a lot of no-prep races in Texas and Oklahoma where we can attend, be done on Saturday night, and home on Sunday so that added to the attraction of it,” Mills explains.

Having Pharris drive the car is a great situation for Mills because he knows the car will be in good hands. Over the past few seasons Pharris has been doing his fair share of Pro Mod racing so he knows what it feels like to drive a car that can get happy-feet in a hurry. He’s ready to transfer that experience into no-prep racing and have some fun.

“People have been commenting both good and bad about us coming over there to race. The no-prep guys come to our sandbox, so we decided to come play in theirs. I’ve been watching a lot of no-prep racing over the past few years and wanted to get involved. It’s a different crowd with a lot of diversity. DeWayne and I do well together in Pro Mod and radial, so we wanted to hook up and see how we could do at no-prep.”
