TX2K draws an impressive and extremely high-end assortment of street cars to Houston, Texas each year to prove they’re the fastest in the world — from 230 MPH Lamborghinis to 6-second Mustangs and everything in between.
At the just-completed TX2K22, racers were pushing the performance envelope to a new level, with several cars running well over 220 MPH during the Roll Racing Invitational, and there were numerous records reset during the drag racing portion of the event. The records and impressive speeds were amazing, but the racing was perhaps overshadowed by a rash of several serious and expensive accidents that unfolded.
Bob Helms, former TX2K Roll Race Invitational champion, went for a wild ride on his 77th birthday. His ridiculously fast Lamborghini made a big move just past the finish line, at which point Helms was just along for the ride. Thankfully, despite making contact with the wall going well over 200 MPH, he wasn’t injured and walked away from this scary crash.
Bradley Jepson was on one heck of a pass behind the wheel of his R35 Nissan GTR when things went wrong in a hurry. The GTR’s engine expired, covering the track in fluid that Jepson got into, causing him to lose control of the Nissan. Jepson hit the concrete retaining with such violence that it required heavy equipment to move it back into place. The GTR didn’t fare too well after the impact with the wall, but Jepson was able to walk away from the crash.
Timothy Skeuse absolutely destroyed his beautiful Audi R8 after an 8-second pass. The Audi made a violent move to the left just after the finish line, and there was nothing Skeuse could do but hold on at that point. The car shot back across the track, just missing the car in the other lane, and hit the wall again before coming to a stop. Skeuse’s safety gear did its job, and the Audi sacrificed itself to allow him to walk away unharmed.
Louis Abreu’s crash during the third round of drag racing qualifying was one of the most violent incidents of the entire weekend. The Audi that Abreu was piloting wasn’t happy as soon as he left the starting line, and continued to fight him as it rocketed down the track. Abreu tried to reel the Audi back in after it started to wiggle around, but his efforts didn’t get the job done, and the car hit the wall head-on with incredible force and slid down the track.
