They may not cover 1,000-feet in a little over 3.5 seconds or run in excess of 300 miles per hour, but anyone that says today’s Drag Radial and True 10.5 cars aren’t the most exciting and unpredictable vehicles in the sport of drag racing needs their head examined.
Case in point is this jaw-droppingly monstrous wheelstand carried out by Outlaw Drag Radial racer Buck Walker in his turbocharged ’88 Chevrolet Camaro.
This death-defying acrobatic stunt captured by the crew at Motor Mania TV occurred at last month’s Holcomb Motorsports Spring Outlaw Civil Wars at the Rockingham Dragway, as Walker squared off with Tony Ridenour in the second round of eliminations. As these cars often do, the front end of the Camaro went nose-up like an airplane on take off just beyond the 60-foot clocks and what looked to be an interesting two-wheel hike to the stripe got a little interesting when the air underneath the car took control.
Unlike others before him in the same precarious situation – at least one of which went fully over backward – Walker was able to corral his mount in without hitting anything; albeit with what was most assuredly some damage in the undercarriage and soil in the drivers seat. Despite the wheelstand and climbing on the brakes to get it tamed down, Walker still tripped the clocks at 5.14-seconds at just 113 miles per.
If any wheelstand is deserving of a perfect 10 from the judges, this is the one.
