Lyle Barnett the embodiment of what you’d expect out of a hardcore drag racer. There’s not a single vehicle on this planet he wouldn’t make a pass in, and he’s fought through great adversity after a fiery crash nearly claimed his life. Barnett had another close call behind the wheel of Scot Tidwell Racing’s Pro Mod this weekend after a huge fire at Alabama International Raceway.

Barnett made a name for himself wheeling different radial cars at a young age all over the Southeastern United States. In 2015, Barnett was nearly lost his life after a terrible crash at No Mercy 6 where he was severely burned. Most normal racers would call it a career after such a horrific incident, but Barnett is far from normal. Barnett fought back from his injuries and returned to South Georgia Motorsports Park, the scene of his crash, and won a Leaf Spring class title behind the wheel of Jason Digby’s Dodge Dart.

Eventually, Barnett found his way to the NHRA Pro Mod world where he’s won several events. In 2024 Barnett has been driving one of Scott Tidwell’s ProCharged Camaros and currently sits 11^th in series points.

Barnett made the trip to Alabama International Raceway to participate in the Drag Coverage Night Of Fire, where he qualified in the fifth spot with a 3.80. During one of Barnett’s runs, there was a mechanical failure that caused the Camaro to burst into flames. Thankfully, all of Barnett’s safety gear did its job and he wasn’t injured in the horrific incident. Barnett will be going over the fire and giving the world its first look at the in-car footage of what happened on the Shake And Bake Show. According to Scott Tidwell Racing, the team is working on securing another car so Barnett can participate in the 70^th NHRA U.S. Nationals.
