Don Saporito and his 1967 Nova are proof that you can take a negative event and turn it into something positive. Don’s previous ride was a stout split bumper Camaro that was a big player in the non prep world. After a terrible accident, Don needed to replace his Camaro, and that’s when this Nova came into his life.
The Nova was originally built by Jerry Bickle Race Cars for Pro Mod action. Don picked up the car because he loves this generation of Nova, and it was a safe car. Don took the car to the Preston family at Next Motorsports for some updates, and a no prep-optimized long travel front suspension. Once Don got the car back, he stuffed his big-block Nitrous engine between the front frame rails and got ready to test.
Now, some people will see the Top Fuel wing on the back of Saporito’s Nova and think it’s kind of useless. According to Saporito, it has actually proven itself very useful and gives him another chassis tuning tool to help keep the car planted on no prep surfaces. In fact, sometimes the wing works a little too good and can cause the car to carry the wheels through the finish line.
So far, the Nova is showing a lot of promise. Don and his team have worked at dialing the car in, and recently won the King Of Columbus no prep race at National Trail Raceway. The plan is to continue putting the car through its paces and get the chassis fully sorted out so Don can throw even more nitrous at it in the near future.
