One of the wildest rides taken all weekend at the ADRL Gateway rags IV in St. Louis (that didn’t result in a crash) was the monster wheelstand ridden out by SuperCar Showdown competitor Chris Holbrook — a former IHRA mountain motor Pro Stock champion.

During Friday evening’s third qualifying session just before sunset, Holbrook took the beams for his solo shot down the Gateway Motorsports Park strip and found out really quick just how much bite the racing surface had as his 2012 Cobra Jet Mustang headed for the clouds. It wasn’t the first time that day Holbrook had skied his Mustang out, but it was certainly the highest, longest, and most damaging of them.

Tyrant Productions, the video production arm of the ADRL, had more cameras than Quaker has oats mounted in, on, and around the Holbrook-driven Mustang providing a glimpse from virtually any angle you can fathom of the massive wheelstand that carried more than 100 feet off the starting line before the CJ crashed back to earth in a shower of sparks in the lane opposite of that from which it started.

The melee of Holbrook’s wheelstand damaged both motor mounts and locked up the power steering, forcing him to take evasive action and crank on the steering wheel to keep the gorgeous machine out of the guardrail. Fortunately, with the assistance of his fellow SuperCar comrades, Holbrook was able to make the necessary repairs and could’ve won the whole shebang had he not run into the seemingly unstoppable Drew Skillman in the semifinals.
