At the recent National Domestic Import Motorsports Association (NDIMA) race contested at Palm Beach International Raceway, a new record was set for an SR20-powered car in the quarter mile.
The SR20 motor is a very small motor with big potential. Nissan first brought the motor into production in the 1990’s to be used in smaller cars. Based on a DOHC design and sporting a whopping 2 liters in base form, most people could not picture the modest motor putting down such impressive numbers. Beef the motor up and add some boost and the power plant shows it can really roar.
In the early 1970’s the Datsun 1200 was released and was made to compete with the Toyota Corolla in the market. The car did see racing action in the Fuji 200 Mile and was even used as a two wheel drive rally car. Now you will see the 1200 with a variety of motors swapped in and at many import drag races.
Kako Racing combined a Datsun 1200 coupe with a SR20 strapped between the fenders to build a lethally fast combo. The team laid down two impressive six-second passes, with record numbers of 6.91-seconds at over 196 mph. The crew’s reaction at the end of the video shows how much work went into this record pass.
