There has been no more outspoken of a proponent for a level playing field in the Pro Stock Motorcycle ranks than Star Racing’s George Bryce, and when you have six NHRA world championships and some 80 national events wins to your credit, you have every right to speak up and let your voice be heard. Following one of the most dominating seasons in NHRA history a year ago by the Harley-Davidson team and an outpouring of negative attention from competitors and fans alike, the NHRA rolled out a new rules package designed to bring all of the engine makes in line with one another from a performance standpoint, effective with this season’s two-wheeled opener in Gainesville.
What this meant was the Buell’s would be able to bridge the gap to the Harley’s, while the Suzuki’s, all but lost in the performance war at the time, would finally be able to contend again. And that was great news for Bryce, who for years campaigned Suzuki’s and was still in the Suzuki engine-building business through his Star Racing shop.
As we’ve already seen this season, the Suzuki-powered bikes are back on the map, and Bryce, although campaigning Buell’s out of his own Sovereign-Star Racing stable, has been back to work preparing Suzuki engines that are fully capable of competing for wins given the new rules package. And part of that effort recently came to fruition, as Star Racing tested a top secret bike and engine for a yet unnamed customer recently in Gainesville that, hopefully, we’ll see at some point this season.
According to Bryce, the bike — who also wouldn’t mention the name of the rider — ran 6.90’s despite a whole heap of traction issues. As he pointed out, and you can clearly hear in the video, the bike spins the tires hard through second and third gears, gets a little out of the groove, but still posts a strong number. This new combo, as its sits, is believed to have another tenth in it, with more on the table given additional tire tuning, clutch tuning, timing, and other variables.
Check out the video and enjoy that sweet music of 14,000 RPM’s banging through the gears!
