We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again; the portability and affordability of Go Pro and similar small-form cameras is one of the greatest racing-related inventions in some time. From Stock Eliminator to Funny Car, those of us stuck behind our keyboards are able to ride along from the perspectives of drivers and racing machines that were previously impossible without strapping a massive camcorder to the roof. Which is exactly why you never witnessed such a thing.
This most recent clip to come across our desks is pretty unique in that the camera, mounted presumably on the roll cage, has been pointed not down the racetrack, but toward the car in the opposing lane. The roll cage you’re riding atop is the supercharged dragster of Orange, Texas’ Chase Murray, and the car you’re looking at is the dragster of Conroe, Texas’ Jennifer White. The scene is the opening round of the four-car Top Dragster Shootout, a special race-within-a-race that was held on Saturday of the JEG’S.com Cajun SPORTSNationals at No Problem Raceway down in Belle Rose, Louisiana late last month.
In this matchup, Murray and White square off in a heads-up race reminiscent of the early Top Dragster Shootouts conducted by the IHRA before the NHRA even knew what the class was. As can be visibly seen, White straps a stellar .005 gate job on Murray and that’s virtually all she wrote (no pun intended). Her 6.548 at 206 miles per hour takes down Murray’s 6.557 at 208 to advance to the final where, for those keeping stats, she defeated Michael Kile for the victory. For the full effect, be sure you watch this one in full screen 1080p!
